Treating trauma and eating disorders concurrently: The Role of a Data-Driven Approach
A growing body of evidence has confirmed that trauma histories and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) often precede and drive eating disorders. Yet, there is little quantitative data to support providers in understanding the overlapping symptoms in this underserved population and selecting appropriate treatments. Historically, providers are guided to refrain from trauma work while in intensive treatment settings and defer this to outpatient treatment. Since 2018, data collected on clients diagnosed with both PTSD and an eating disorder have illuminated the specific needs of this population, and longitudinal findings have demonstrated that treating PTSD and eating disorders concurrently is an effective way to treat both diagnoses.
